Reading time is estimated by dividing the total word count by 200 words per minute, which is a widely accepted average silent reading speed for adults. Speaking time uses a lower rate of 130 words per minute, reflecting typical presentation or narration pace. Both figures are approximations - actual reading or speaking time will vary depending on text complexity, individual reading speed and pausing.

Your text never leaves your device and is not stored, logged or transmitted anywhere. This makes it safe to analyze confidential drafts, private emails or sensitive documents.
Sentences are detected by splitting text on punctuation marks (periods, exclamation points and question marks) and filtering out empty segments, so multiple consecutive punctuation marks do not inflate the count. Paragraphs are identified by blank lines (two or more consecutive newline characters); if no blank lines exist, the entire text is treated as one paragraph. Edge cases like abbreviations ending in a period may slightly affect sentence counts in highly technical text.
The Word Counter has no hard character limit - it can handle text as large as your browser's memory allows. In practice, documents up to several hundred thousand words process in under a second on any modern device. For very large texts (entire books or multi-chapter manuscripts), performance may vary depending on your device's CPU, but the tool will not reject or truncate the input.
Unlike Word or Docs, this tool provides additional metrics such as speaking time, unique word count and top keyword frequency that are not available in standard word processors.
